There are numerous ways the community may take action to protect themselves from wildfire. Individual defensible space may be ineffective if surrounding properties do not also engage in fuels mitigation treatments. Cohesive fuels reduction treatments are proven to be most effective. Maintenance to retain the desired condition is necessary with frequency being determined by the vegetation type.

Firewise Communities/USA is a unique opportunity available to America's fire-prone communities. Its goal is to encourage and acknowledge action that minimizes home loss to wildfire. It teaches you to prepare for a fire before it occurs. The program adapts especially well to small communities, developments and residential associations of all types. Firewise Communities/USA is a simple, three-legged template that is easily adapted to different locales. It works in the following way:

* Wildland fire staff from federal, state or local agencies provide a community with information about coexisting with wildfire along with mitigation information tailored to that specific area.
* The community assesses its risk and creates its own network of cooperating homeowners, agencies and organizations.
* The community identifies and implements local solutions.

The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County has assisted five communities in Nevada to become designated Firewise Communities USA. They are Lake Wildwood, Lake of the Pines, Mountain Lakes Estates, Banner Mountain and the Tahoe Donner Association. Please contact the council for FREE assistance in becoming a Firewise Community!

Community projects such as clearing evacuation routes or reducing hazardous fuels on commonly owned property serve to bring together neighbors with a sense of pride and satisfaction while making everyone safer from wildfire. The Fire Safe Council will assist with an assessment and recommendations to make your effort effective against wildfire.
