Greater Alta Sierra
Firewise Community
The Greater Alta Sierra (GAS) is located 4 to 10 miles south of Grass Valley, along a series of hills and ridges east of State Highway 49 in Nevada County. The area includes Alta Sierra Estates, Alta Sierra Ranches, Lodestar and various intervening and adjacent neighborhoods. The GAS community has approximately 3,300 homes with approximately 600 lots remaining undeveloped. Estimated population is 8,250. Elevations range from about 1400 feet in the south to around 2350 feet in the north. The slope percent varies from nearly flat to over 65%, creating complex topography and, combined with the current infrastructure makes it difficult to define a convenient location for a major fuel break. South Wolf Creek, the primary watercourse within the GAS, drains south and west, emptying into Wolf Creek. Many small, seasonal watercourses and perennial ponds are laced throughout the watershed.
FIREWISE COMMUNITY PROJECT AT ADAM RYAN PRESERVE
Work scheduled for June 11-12, 2012
Corner of Dog Bar Road & Alta Sierra Drive, Grass Valley, CA
Years of fire suppression on forested lands has created a perfect storm in many of our communities and all that is needed to set it off is a spark. To help prevent a catastrophic wildfire in Alta Sierra the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County (FSCNC), The Greater Alta Sierra Firewise Community (GAS FWC) and AmeriCorps NCCC have teamed up with Bear Yuba Land Trust (BYLT) to improve their 40 acre Adam Ryan Wildlife Preserve. The Preserv
e, located at the intersection of Dog Bar Road and Alta Sierra Drive, is home to the Alan Thiesen Trail which is a 1 mile loop trail open to the public.
On June 11 & 12 FSCNC, GAS FWC, and AmeriCorps will lead workdays which will focus on removing dead and dying trees from near the roadsides, pulling scotch broom, thinning ladder fuels and maintaining the trail. To ensure the safety of the public the trail will be closed for these two days. These efforts are all part of the plan to reduce the fire hazard for the preserve and the greater community.
