Weed wrenches used to remove Scotch Broom can now be borrowed from the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County. Download an application to borrow a weed wrench or stop by the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County’s office at 139 E. Main Street in downtown Grass Valley. It is advisable to call 530-272-1122 first to check on availability of the weed wrenches and office hours.

Work continues along Champion Mine Road sponsored by the Greater Champion Mine Neighborhood Association. Nevada Irrigation District is now collaborating on removal of broom in the ditch. Hell's Half Acre

This site is located immediately adjacent to Twin Cities Church off the Rough & Ready Highway just outside Grass Valley. Work continues to remove broom from Hell’s Half Acre which is a unique biological site and is currently used by the Red Bud Chapter of the California Native Plant Society for education and restoration of native plant species. This project site is co-sponsored by Twin Cities Church and the Red Bud Chapter of CNPS. Project site coordinators are Fred Bergman and Bill Wilson. This year the Scotch Broom Challenge has spread to Placer County. We’re excited to see the Challenge spread into Placer County where they also experience a high infestation of broom and a high wildfire danger. This is a brand new site for the Scotch Broom Challenge and the very first Scotch Broom Challenge in Placer County. This project site is sponsored by Placer Land Trust. Hirschman Pond Trail Access, Nevada City

The parking access to the Hirschman’s Pond trail is over grown with Scotch Broom. The Nevada County Land Trust along in conjunction with Greater Cement Hill Neighborhood Association is working to clear the Scotch Broom from the parking lot giving visitors to the public trail a safer parking area. Oak Tree Park, North San Juan
North San Juan Fire protection District & Yuba Watershed institute
Work continues along Oak Tree Road to maintain the grant funded fuels reduction treatment. Re-growth of broom in the treatment area is being addressed to retain the effectiveness of the project. New work was begun last year at the site of the community park. Work will continue at this site in order to control the existing broom and reclaim land lost to dense infestations. Site sponsors are the North San Juan Fire Protection District and the Yuba Watershed Institute. Project site coordinators are Rusty Kauffman and Daniel Nicolson. This is the second year for this site working to remove the infestation of broom along the roadway. The initial clearing is nearly complete and if enough volunteers are available, work will begin along Gracie Road. Meeting site is Mini Mania parking lot along Gold Flat Road. This project site is sponsored by the Banner Mountain Homeowner’s Association as part of their Firewise Community program. Project site coordinator is Helene Hall.
